Appollo 11 – 40th Anniversary

Over the past few months I’ve used the fact that this year is the 40th anniversary of the first human being landing on the moon as a focus of several keynote presentations.

Now that we’re approaching the actual date of that anniversary there are several events and projects beginning to attract attention that may prove useful to classroom teachers. We Choose the Moon is an interesting interactive online resource from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. We Choose the Moon provides a real-time simulated experience of the events leading up to the launch of Apollo 11, and the journey to the moon.

The use of Twitter updates to simulate the real-life events in those hours before launch provides for interesting reading – and I can imagine might really engage some learners. There are also audio tracks to listen to, and desktop widgets to download to help keep track of time etc.

By signing up to the mailing list you earn a ticket aboard man’s first trip to the moon. On July 16th, 2009, at 9:32 a.m. ET, you will depart for the moon alongside astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins, and relive history in real time over the course of four days-exactly 40 years after the real launch happened in 1969!

Certainly worth a look if you’re considering integrating something about this historic event into your classroom programme over the next couple of weeks!
