    A lot of interesting points here James. I cannot pretend to be digitally fluent judging by any of these definitions but I can certainly say I’m a learner and on the way.
    What resonates with me most is your last point.
    We should not be teaching this in isolation. As well as the who, why and how we should be teaching our students to consider the effects of their online use.
    I teach juniors and we use the concept of bucket filling to teach and encourage kindness and empathy. Children and adults alike. need to practice those in their online world as well as the physical one.

      Kia ora Lyn, thank you so much for interacting with this post. It’s great to see it’s being read, enjoyed, challenged and explored. I’ve been in the digitech space for nearly a decade and still don’t really believe I’m an expert- it’s a big continuum and somedays I sit further along than others. I truly believe the key to successful digital fluency is to weave it into everything that we do (when it fits and when it adds). There are great models out there to support thinking, the SAMR model is one that most can really interact with easily.

      I love working with juniors and exploring their passion. The iPad can be magic for bringing their learning alive and making it rewindable. Everything in moderation. Play, contact, interaction and bucket filling in the real world and the online world- you’ve hit the nail on the head!

    I am currently completing my Teacher Education Refresh through the Open Polytechnic to return to secondary teaching, next term, after a 13 year break. Your article was very thought provoking and interesting. In my view it has been a missed opportunity in the Couse that the assignments in my Refresh programme don’t contain an online, tutorial or course in digital readiness to increase our fluency. There has been a lot of academic research-based focus on the standards which while important can be learnt quickly and we have all practiced before. But no ICT component. I have fed this back to the provider. I’m
    Personally working on my skills but it would have been nice to have more support given we have all had time out of the profession.

Perhaps more importantly, welcome back to education- it’s wonderful to be welcoming people when so much time is spent saying goodbye at the moment. It’s really good to know you’ve fed back to your course provider as it’s something we can make plenty of noise about here too.       I can imagine that in 13 years lots will have changed. There will be much that’s the same and hopefully reassuring you in your decision to return. Digital fluency and understanding WHO we are in both worlds as one person is paramount to students finding success in the future. If every school gave an hour per week over to online interactions and smart behaviour in both the real and online world (as a dedicated learning programme), we wouldn’t have some of the challenges we have now (I would like to hope).
